Marked differences in housing conditions between people with and without a migrant background

2017-01-10 13:17:10

WIESBADEN - In 2014, the housing conditions of people with a migrant background differed markedly from those of people without a migrant background in Germany. Based on the microcensus, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that people with a migrant background lived in their own home much less often (34.5%) than people without a migrant background (54.8%). The percentage of people with a migrant background living in residential buildings with more than 12 dwellings (6%) was twice as high as that of people without a migrant background (3%). The living floor space available to them (32.8 square metres per person) was smaller (without a migrant background: 47.7 square metres) and they lived in households which paid a higher gross rent exclusive of heating expenses per square metre (7.26 euros; without a migrant background: 6.69 euros).
