Expression "Information technology" is used in the second edition of the Manual and "Information and communication technology" in the third edition.

"Information technology / Information and communication technology" covers both hardware and software. Their development and diffusion is believed to have had a major impact on the pattern of production and employment in a wide range of industries.  In the case of hardware it may be interesting not only to know when a company innovates by first introducing a technologically new or improved piece of IT equipment but also the IT proportion of its total stock of equipment including subsequent purchases of further machines of the same model  (Definition identical in second and third editions).
