United Nations terminology
A housing unit is a separate and independent place of abode intended for habitation by a single household, or one not intended for habitation but occupied as living quarters by a household at the time of the census (although intended for habitation by one household, a housing unit may, at the time of the census, be occupied by one or more households or by a part of a household).
