Definition: Appgar score
System of scoring infant’s physical condition at one minute and five minutes after birth. The heart rate, respiration, muscle tone, colour and response to stimuli are scored 0, 1 or 2. The maximum total score for a normal baby is 10. Those with low scores require immediate attention if they are to survive.
